Driving to Tokyo

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

Once we arrived at Narita airport, some of the Dentsu staff picked us up and brought us to what was to be our Hotel. The raid to Tokyo takes about an hour, these are some of the pictures I took from the running van. The light was awesome but I reacted too late…

Flying over northen Siberia

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

Normally, a post about a flight wouldn’t be justified. In this case, flying from Schiphol to Narita over northen Siberia while destroying a day in my life at an extraordinary rate with JAL Executive class, I think it worths the post.

tokyo0901_r0010135

Amazing straight lines which I still don’t know what they are… roads?

tokyo0901_r0010137

Northen and southern view just about the dawn…

The views were stunning, you could see small aggregates of lights on a large ice plate, the full moon was on our six, the sun on our twelve… I didn’t slept too much as I didn’t want to miss any impression… the Executive department was almost empty and the stewardesses took amazing care of us.

Meeting Theo again

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

Theo picked me up at Delft CS with his infamous white Volvo. First we went to his old studio which I have to say it’s very beautiful!

Then we went to the hill (Wind Lab), there I met Subalekha and first connection: she was a collaborator at Interactivos08 NYC.

I stayed two days at Theo’s home and it was, as the dutch say, erg gezellig.

From Madrid to Vorden (The Nederlands)

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

The first part of this amazing adventure was getting to Holland as Theo, Loek and me would fly together from Amsterdam Schiphol to Tokyo Narita. This would happen on January the 9th but before that I decided to pay a visit to my dutch host family. They picked me up at Schiphol and we headed to Vorden which is the small village where they live. The snow was falling on our arrival, it  was very cold…

Theo Jansen exhibition in Tokyo

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

The amazing experience with Theo and its Animaris Modularius at MNCARS conveyed me directly to assist Theo at his exhibition in Tokyo. The exhibition has been successful as can be. The experience has been overwhelming… and it still is. Details coming in the next posts. I’ll try to update as if I do write here, I’m not walking on the streets of Tokyo.

In the way from Linz to Benešov

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

The first sweet adventure was meeting my friends living in Linz, but after I had finished the levelHead setup I took a morning train direct to Benešov, a town near Praha. Other friends of mine live there, I didn’t remember when it was the last time I met Petra… time to see each other, this was the second adventure.

When I stepped out the train at Benešov station I was the only one that so did, the floor was white of ice as it was freezing cold, I was not in Austria anymore so my cell phone didn’t work and I had no Czech money… Petra was not there! at that point I just hopped that I hadn’t mistaken the place and that Petra would soon come to pick me up.

I hadn’t been in the Czech Republic since the early nineties, one of my first impressions this time was that it still looks quite socialist. One surprise! the old socialist “beton palen” were still there, and my old obsession with them was alive as well.

The last day Petra brought me to Praha and we paid a little visit to this amazing but very touristic city. It was certainly getting very cold.

levelHead at Funky Pixels (new AEC)

January 21, 2009 by pablo ripolles

Very strange days indeed! between Christmas and New Year’s Eve I went to Linz to setup Julian’s levelHead at Funky Pixels in the new Ars Electronica Center.

linz0812_r0010009

I always enjoy taking pictures from the plane’s window. Mostly I never succeed in getting some result similar to what my eyes could see, this time it was an exception.

linz0812_r0010001

In the morning, the beauty of Linz’ architecture and its Danube took me by surprise.

At the new AEC every one was in a hurry as the opening was getting dramatically closer. While setting up levelHead I had time to take some pictures.

The LEDKeepies are here to stay

January 7, 2009 by pablo ripolles

LEDKeepies are my personal variation on the LEDThrowies by the Graffiti Research Lab.

A 10 mm LEDKeepie

The LEDKeepies came out as LEDThrowies adapted for a non-conventional wedding. In Spain we use to give little symbolic presents to the wedding attendants. When my non-conventional friends decided to marry, there appear proposals to do it in the least conventional way possible. The main feature of these adapted LEDThrowies was that they where, in principle, not going to be thrown away but kept at home, another feature was that they should be able to be turned off and to be battery replaceable.

LEDKeepies 10 mm

The guest were impressed as they had never seen such thing, 5 min later all kind of games where played by little children and big children.

Several months later, while performing Animaris Modularius at Máquinas & Almas (MNCARS), we decided to make a present for Theo as a means of showing our gratefulness. I came out with the idea of attaching some LEDKeepies to the joints of one of the last legs of Animaris Modularius and picture the motion with very low light conditions and long exposure times. We were not allowed to do it unless we had previously asked permission to Theo, so the present could never be a surprise. I did so and Theo liked the idea very much! The pictures were taken by Igor González.

Animaris at Máquinas & Almas (MNCARS)

January 7, 2009 by pablo ripolles

In the time Máquinas & Almas exhibition was in Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), I was part of the team that helped Theo Jansen to assemble Animaris Modularius. The following months we performed the beast and I became then responsible for its maintenance.

Hello world!

January 1, 2009 by pablo ripolles

Hello world! is a classic, therefore I’ll let it here.

I’d like to note however that at the time of this writing, I’ve already had two fantastic collaborations. One with Theo and one with Julian. For now I’ll just insert the placeholders and try to edit them in the meantime.
